Counselling and Psychotherapy

One to one counselling and psychotherapy, mindfulness and therapeutic groups. In person, online or within nature. In-person client work based in the Morningside area of Edinburgh and Bonnyrigg, Midlothian. Within nature sessions are in Edinburgh and Lothians.

My approach

Sometimes in life we find ourselves stuck, feeling depressed, struggling to find our sense of aliveness or move forward into fully living our own life. Sometimes situations at work or personal relationships in our lives cause us deep anxiety and confusion. Or maybe our lives have been interrupted by a bereavement, illness, painful experience, traumatic event or abuse that has left us with low self esteem, feeling overwhelmed, overlooked, uncomfortable in our own body or numb.

My view is that occasionally we all need a warm, open, safe and accepting space to sift through our turbulent experiences, thoughts and feelings. A space for us to explore our own story accompanied by another person who offers their listening and caring presence to us, just as we are, in all the messiness and difficulty. A space to feel and explore our emotions and experiences such that we can unfurl into our own life, relationships and aspirations. Below are some photos of the dedicated therapy room I use in Bonnyrigg, Midlothian. I also practice from a therapy room in Morningside, Edinburgh at The Life Academy Wellbeing Centre, 3B Greenhill Park, EH10 4DW

Why I offer to work therapeutically with nature

The biologist in me is also very present in how I seek to integrate the natural world and wildness with therapeutic work. I like creating opportunities for us to encounter ourselves and nature differently, and perhaps receive some of the solace that nature can offer. Some call this ecotherapy or wild therapy. But, other people just prefer to do their therapeutic work outside and on the move - and that’s totally fine. I can accommodate work within nature in the Edinburgh and Lothians.

I have a bit of a thing for the wild wonders that are rivers - which is where my practice name came from. I like to start therapeutic work online to offer a private safe space. Then we can either remain online or you might wish to combine that with specific outdoor sessions (or move our work totally outdoors if that is what you would prefer).

Get in touch if you are interested in counselling, mindfulness or my next therapeutic group. For my one to one work, I offer a free initial session so you can meet me and discuss your needs.

“When despair for the world grows in me
and I wake in the night at the least sound
in fear of what my life and my children’s lives may be,
I go and lie down where the wood drake
rests in his beauty on the water, and the great heron feeds.
I come into the peace of wild things
who do not tax their lives with forethought
of grief. I come into the presence of still water.
And I feel above me the day-blind stars
waiting with their light. For a time
I rest in the grace of the world, and am free.”
